RECIPE FOR SAFE COOKING

Did you know the kitchen is where most home fires start? Underwriters Laboratories Inc (ULI) reminds home cooks to always follow these safety guidelines:

1. Never leave food that is cooking on the stovetop unattended. Regularly check food that is cooking inside the oven.

2. Add an ounce of prevention by keeping children and pets away from the cooking area.

3. Turn pot handles in, toward the back of the stove, but away from the hot elements and burners.

4. Never store things inside an oven and don’t use an oven to heat a room.

5. Blend safety into your cooking by keeping the cooking area clear of anything that can burn, such as bags, potholders, food packaging and draperies.

6. Stir with care - wear short, close-fitting or tightly rolled sleeves when cooking. Loose clothing can dangle onto burners and catch fire.

7. Use thick, dry, flame-resistant potholders. A wet potholder presents a scald danger if the moisture becomes heated.
