Here are the answers to the
questions most commonly asked of members of our department. If your specific question is not listed, please submit it using the feedback form.
Q: How late are you open?
A: The Greenfield Police Department is staffed 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
Q: Can I park my car on the street overnight in the City of Greenfield?
A: Overnight parking is allowed in the City of Greenfield without permit with
the following restrictions: Vehicles must be parked on an odd-even schedule. For example, if your address is 5032 West Happy Street, you would park
your car in front of your home on even days of the month and across the street on odd days of the month. Additionally, heavy trucks over 10,000
pounds may not be parked on any city street for more than 2 hours. Vehicles left on the street, unmoved, for more than 48 hours are subject to
citation and towing. For additional questions, call (414) 761-5300.
Q: I just got a ticket, what do I do now?
A: A City of Greenfield citation, whether it be traffic related or an ordinance
violation, is handled under the jurisdiction of the Greenfield Municipal Court. If you wish to contest the citation, you must appear in court on the date
and time indicated on the citation. At that time you will be given an opportunity to enter a plea to the offense. If your plea is "Not Guilty", you
will be given a trial date on which to return and present evidence to the Judge at which time the City will also present its case. If your plea is
"Guilty" or "No Contest" you will be found guilty, but the Judge will give you an opportunity to speak on your own behalf and offer any mitigating
circumstances. In most circumstances, the Judge will give consideration to those individuals who have corrected driver license, registration and
equipment violations and who bring proof to court. For additional questions, call the Greenfield Municipal Court at (414) 761-5366.
But, Can't I just pay the darn thing and get it over with?
Yes. Any citation can be stipulated to at any time prior to the court date.
Payment for the full amount of the forfeiture indicated must be made at the Greenfield Police Department. When a citation is paid, a plea of "No
Contest" and finding of "Guilty" is entered by the court and the case is closed.
Payment can be made in cash, by credit card (in person only) or by local check,
24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year.
Q: My car was towed by the Greenfield Police Department. Where did it go?
A: The Greenfield Police Department utilizes a contract towing service, N & S
Towing of West Allis. In most circumstances, the vehicle would not be held at the Police Department's impound lot, but would instead be held by N & S
Towing at their yard. Contact the officer who handled the case or N & S Towing to find out the location of your vehicle. N & S Towing can also
advise you regarding payment of the towing fees and storage charges. If a vehicle is impounded at the Greenfield Police Department, all towing fees
must be paid to N & S before the vehicle is released. A receipt must be shown to pick up your vehicle. N & S can be reached at (414) 476-8697.
Q: I locked my keys in my car. Will the police department come and open it?
A: Unfortunately, due to liability concerns, the police department no longer
offers this service. The only exception is when a person is locked inside of the vehicle and their safety is in jeopardy. If you have locked your keys in
your vehicle, please consult the locksmith section of the Yellow Pages. The police department's contract towing company, N & S Towing, also provides
this service at a nominal fee. They can be reached at (414) 476-8697.
Q: How do I get a copy of a police or accident report?
A: Reports are usually available within three to five days after the incident and can be obtained in person at the Greenfield Police Department, 24
hours a day, 7 days a week. Cost is $.25 per page. Please consult the clerical page for further information.

Q: Can I register my vehicle at the police department?
A: Vehicle registration and driver licensing is handled by the Wisconsin Department of Transportation. The Motor Vehicle Department has an on line registration renewal site. The nearest Motor Vehicle Station is at 5500 West
Grange Avenue and can be reached at (414) 266-1000.

Q: Can you give me the non-emergency phone number of another police department?
A: For the non-emergency phone numbers of other agencies, please consult the "blue" section of your phone book.
Or, since you are online now, enter the name of the agency into a search engine, like Google.
Q: My neighbor hasn't shoveled his snow. What can I do about it?
A: Greenfield Municipal Code requires that sidewalks be cleared by noon of
each day or immediately after snow has fallen. Violations should be reported to the Department of Inspection Services and Zoning at (414) 543-5500 ext. 336.
