GREENFIELD POLICE REITERATE – POSSESSION AND USE OF FIREWORKS IS ILLEGAL

Chief Francis Springob reiterated today that fireworks are illegal to possess or use anywhere within the city. Below is his statement regarding the possession and use of fireworks:

Each year our department receives many questions relating to the sale, possession, and use of fireworks; along with a considerable number of calls-for-service due to the discharge of fireworks.

In addition to the potential for injuries and fires caused by use of fireworks, there is the obvious nuisance of loud noise.

Even though certain items referred to as fireworks may be legal to possess or use in other communities, the Greenfield municipal code strictly prohibits them. As a rule of thumb, any device that emits smoke, sparkles, or makes a noise is unlawful to possess or use in Greenfield.

Residents and visitors should be aware that the use or possession of fireworks may result in the issuance of a citation and fine.

The Greenfield City Code is listed below:

10.03 Regulation of fireworks.(Rep. & recr. #1358)

(1) Definition.

(a) In this section, "fireworks" means anything manufactured, processed or packaged for exploding, emitting sparks or combustion which does not have another common use, including, but not limited to, the following:

1. A cap containing not more than 1/4 grain of explosive mixture, if the cap is used or possessed or sold for use in a device which prevents direct bodily contact with a cap when it is in place for explosion.

2. A toy snake which contains no mercury.

3. A sparkler on a wire or wood stick not exceeding 36 inches in length or 1/4 inch in outside diameter which does not contain magnesium, chlorate or perchlorate.

4. A device designed to spray out paper confetti or streamers and which contains less than 1/4 grain of explosive mixture.

5. A device designed to produce an audible sound but not explode, spark, move or emit an external flame after ignition and which does not exceed 3 grams in total weight.

6. A device that emits smoke with no external flame and does not leave the ground.

7. A cylindrical fountain not exceeding 100 grams in total weight with an inside tube diameter not exceeding 3/4 inch, designed to sit on the ground and emit only sparks and smoke.

8. A cone fountain not exceeding 75 grams in total weight, designed to sit on the ground and emit only sparks and smoke.
