GREENFIELD POLICE RELEASE RESULTS OF FIRST OR ITS KIND SURVEY
The Greenfield Police Department has released the results of a first of its kind Community Service Survey.
The department was anxious to learn the public perception of department performance after implementing a series of enhanced community service
initiatives in 2006.
Surveys were sent to a random sampling of 500 residents who had contact with the department in 2008. The department registered a response rate of 30%.
“The response rate was enormous considering the typical response rate of a blind survey,” said Deputy Inspector Bradley Wentlandt. Typically, blind, mailed surveys show a response rate of 5% to 20%
Wentlandt said. Residents were able to respond to the survey online using a special access code or by mail. “What’s really astounding is the number of mailed responses we received.” Wentlandt said.
“We didn’t include return postage to encourage residents to use the online survey, but 2/3 of the respondents paid for their own stamp and wanted to be heard.”
The results of the survey show that more than 90% of residents surveyed rated the overall performance of the department “Good” or
“Excellent”. When all positive responses were considered (including ratings of “Average”) the results jump to 97% satisfaction.
“Although we will continue to strive for 100% satisfaction, I could not be more proud of the men and women of our police department. Their pride,
professionalism and commitment are the reason for these outstanding survey results,” said Chief Francis Springob.
The department was most pleased with the results of specific survey items related to employee performance. “All of the performance metrics we
established received positive ratings from over 90% of the respondents.” Wentlandt said.
The department believes the survey is the first of its kind in southeastern Wisconsin. “We’re not aware of any other agency in the area
conducting a random, comprehensive, statistically valid survey,” Springob said.
The department intends to conduct ongoing surveys to measure performance and identify areas for improvement.
