Law enforcement resources in Greenfield were taxed to the limit last night as an early season snowfall, changing weather conditions and slippery
roads conspired against the gallant men and women of the Greenfield Police Department.
During the five hour period of 5:30 Pm to 9:30 PM, Greenfield officers responded to 36 traffic crashes involving 67 vehicles. Of those 36
crashes, five involved injuries and one was a roll over.
“That’s the most crashes I’ve seen in that short period of time in my 18 years here,” said Sergeant Chip Falk, the second
shift supervisor. All available police officers were tied up attending to crashes for several hours. “I’m really proud of the Earlyshift officers,” Falk said. “The conditions were very icy
and dangerous. In most cases, the responding officers had a hard time standing on the slippery pavement.” One officer sustained minor injuries when she slipped on the ice and fell at one of the crash scenes.
Two Illinois men were injured in the roll over crash that happened at 9:00 PM in the 4300 block of West Loomis Road. Both were transported to St.
Francis Hospital for non-life-threatening injuries. Their 2000 Ford truck slid on the icy pavement, struck the median and rolled over.
“I think the weather really took people by surprise,” Falk said. “The pavement looked wet in most areas but was actually
ice.” Falk added that drivers need to remember to slow down and allow extra following distance when weather conditions change.
