The United States Department of Justice has awarded the Greenfield Police Department a grant of nearly $15,000 for the purchase of bulletproof vests.
The funds were awarded under the Federal Bulletproof Vest Partnership Act which provides law enforcement agencies with 50% funding toward the purchase of
bulletproof vests. The Greenfield Police Department intends to use the funding in early 2010 as part of a department-wide vest replacement program that occurs every five years. The ballistic material used to make
body armor for police officers is only warranted for five years because it can deteriorate over time.
Since the program started in 2002, the department has been awarded nearly $40,000 for vest replacement.
